With the terrible events of Hurricane Katrina, there has been an outpouring of support throughout the nation of people looking to help in any way that they can. Along with donations of money, clothing and food, another way to help is to donate blood. Currently, the American Red Cross has been asked to be on standby and to over collect blood products that may need to be shipped down south.

At the Boston Donor Center, there is an urgent need for platelet donors. This type of donation is done through automation, where you are sitting comfortably in a recliner while your blood is drawn and your platelets are separated while you donate.

The general requirements for donating platelets are the same as donating regular whole blood except that you cannot have any aspirin containing products for 48 hours prior to the donation. You should allow @ 2 hours for a platelet donation (platelet donations typically go to patients with cancer and leukemia and only have a shelf life of 3–5 days!). We have satellite t.v. to watch a movie while you donate and pizza will be provided for all donors!!

To check for donor eligibility refer to www.newenglandblood.org .

Sign up TODAY!! To make an appointment or for further questions on donating, contact Eileen Hughes at the American Red Cross at 781-910-8012 or email hugheseil@usa.redcross.org.

Thank you for your support!
