Come and hear Simmons’ School of Social Work graduate student Claire Chantelle as she shares her journey to authenticity.

The recent movie success “Transamerica” is about a trans-sexual who is afraid to tell the truth about her identity and past with a long-lost 17 year old rebellious teen-age son. They embark on a journey that will challenge and change both their lives. The movie Transamerica has ushered in an awareness of transgender issues that have become the topic of much discussion lately.

Come and hear Simmons School of Social Work graduate student Claire Chantelle as she shares her journey to authenticity. As a transwoman, Claire has a unique perspective on gender and living fully. Her story is an example of a death and a rebirth. She will share the turmoil she experienced in her life leading up to her transition from male to female, her experiences during the process, as well as the reactions from family, friends, and strangers following her process of going full-time as a woman.

Closely related to the story of Transamerica, Claire had a strained relationship with her youngest daughter Erin. Life events would see fit that these two would come together after a prolonged absence. As a result of their challenges and experiences, they would forge a relationship that was stronger than before Claire’s transition. Erin Robertson will appear with Claire in the second half of the presentation and take questions from the audience about her own experience as a child with a transgender parent.
