Wednesday April 26th
Day of Silence
The Alliance is recognizing the national day of silence by asking all those who agree with the cause to take a vow of silence for the day.
The Day of Silence, a project of GLSEN or the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bullying and harassment unacceptable in schools participate in events to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment in effect, the silencing experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students and their allies.
The Day of Silence is an annual opportunity for students to tell their truths about anti-LGBT bullying, violence and harassment. A GLSEN commissioned survey, From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America conducted by Harris Interactive, found that sexual orientation and gender expression are among the top three reasons teens report that students are harassed at their schools. GLSEN 2003 National School Climate Survey found that 4 out of 5 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety.
We are very fortunate that here at Simmons we do not have a problem with these issues but in recognition of those who have had problems with these, please join the Alliance with recognizing this national day to show the city of Boston and Simmons College what they are missing when they silence certain individuals.
The Alliance will have a table in the lobby Tuesday April 25th with stickers that you can wear to show people why you are not speaking. Professors in the past have quite understood with the cause but we recommend that you show your professor either a note or your sticker to explain to them why you may not be speaking on Wednesday
Also Wednesday evening will be having a break the silence party in the Alliance Lounge is Mesick Hall at 7pm. We will be discussing Why Silence as it has become a big topic
If you have any questions you can either stop by the table or e-mail me at klaus@simmons.edu or rheaume@simmons.edu
