Below is a two week “look ahead” at all construction activities scheduled on our campus. We plan to send these out regularly through Campus Announcements and post them on the facilities web page at http://my.simmons.edu/services/facilities/ so that we can keep everyone as informed as possible on what to expect.
Here’s what to expect during the next two weeks:
• Completion of the construction fencing installation will be this Friday, June 9th.
• Installation of both exterior and interior signage to assist in understanding how the pedestrian paths work during construction completed this week.
• Closing of the existing sidewalk between Park Science leading to the MCB. Access to and from Park Science will be through the library and along Avenue Louis Pasteur.
• Widening the existing driveway slightly to allow better vehicle circulation and to maintain two-way access on the driveway as much as possible.
• Relocation of the guard shack closer to the existing garage access ramp.
• Increase in noise from large equipment, including excavators, dump trucks and concrete trucks.
• Trench excavation at the perimeter new garage walls. This work has begun at MCB side of the site and will continue around the garage walls. The sequence for remaining walls is as follows;
o New Garage Wall adjacent Palace Road
o New Garage Wall adjacent Park Science
o New Garage Wall adjacent our driveway.
This work will take approximately three weeks to complete. The noise, dust and odors will be similar to the past few days of excavation.
• Installation of the temporary driveway between Park Science and Lefavour Hall. Asphalt will be placed during this operation. Expect some odor which will dissipate after a few hours.
• Extensive pruning of trees adjacent to Park Science and a protective maintenance plan will be implemented. We will be relocating one tree adjacent Park Science and the Lefavour building.
• Widening of the driveway at the MCB end of Palace Road to allow deliveries to occur from Palace road instead of traveling through our main driveway. This work will take approximately one week to complete.
Note about driveway access to and from our existing underground garage ramp: It will be necessary to temporarily adjust the construction fence along the driveway during several of the upcoming early construction activities. This will sometimes require reducing the width of the driveway to one lane in some locations. Access to and from the garage will be maintained.
The current planned dates for this to occur are as follows;
Thursday, June 8th through Friday, June 9th
Monday, June 26th through Friday, June 30th
Wednesday, July 12th through Friday, July 21st
There will be additional dates when we will have a single lane condition later in the summer during slurry wall installation. These dates will be provided as soon as they are available.
When the driveway is reduced to one lane there will be flag persons assisting with the directing of traffic. We are working diligently with the contractor to minimize these durations as much as possible. Some slight adjustments in start, duration and finish for these activities may be necessary. We will be updating the information on the announcements and our web site as changes occur.
We appreciate your cooperation regarding the construction activities. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact Edward Jacques at 617-521-2063 or Edward.jacques@simmons.edu.
