Colleges of the Fenway Boston Immersion Alternative Spring Break Youth Empowerment in Roxbury March 4-9, 2007

The Colleges of the Fenway Civic Engagement Committee is organizing a Boston Immersion Alternative Spring Break to be held from March 4-9, 2007.

A group of 20-25 college students from Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Studies, Massachusetts College of Art, Emmanuel College and Wheelock College, will spend the week housed in Wentworth space while immersing themselves in the Roxbury community. The week’s events will help students answer the question “how can we, as college students, be active community participants, adding our interests and skills to the needs and interests of the community?”

The theme of the trip is Youth Empowerment with a focus on the communities of Roxbury and Mission Hill. Daily learning opportunities will include meeting the community, understanding the assets and strengths of Roxbury and Mission Hill, exploring the challenges these communities face, learning how to take action, and bringing it all together throughout the week with reflection sessions. Trainings and panels will also include presentations from local government and non-profit leaders and area youth.

All participants are expected to participate for the entire 6 day, 5 night period. Students are required to partake in morning sessions focusing on the daily theme, in afternoon volunteering with an assigned community partner, and in debriefings at the end of each day. There are mandatory events and orientations prior to the break that all participants must attend to prepare for the week. Please see the application for additional details.

Applications can be picked up outside the Scott/Ross Center (MCB W102) or sent via email by requesting an electronic copy from flug@simmons.edu. There are only 2-3 remaining spots available. Only serious applicants should apply. All applications are due by 5pm on Friday January 19, 2007 to darcel.hunt@simmons.edu or to the Scott/Ross Center.

Feel free to contact Darcel Hunt (darcel.hunt@simmons.edu), Kristy Beaudoin (kristy.beaudoin@simmons.edu), or Susie Flug, Associate Director of Undergraduate Service Learning (flug@simmons.edu, 617-521-2477), with questions. Along with the Colleges of the Fenway Civic Engagement Committee, the Scott/Ross Center for Community Service is sponsoring this trip, with support from the Alumnae Association of Simmons College .
