Below is the latest update on the School of Management construction activities. As always, construction related announcements, including a detailed phase by phase description of anticipated construction impacts, can be viewed on the Facilities web page at http://my.simmons.edu/services/facilities/.
JANUARY 2007
Construction of the garage walls was completed on schedule in late November. The temporary guide walls used to construct the garage walls have now been demolished and removed. The slurry plant has been dismantled and taken off site. Excavation to the top of the first level of the underground garage is now complete.
Placement of the steel for the plaza has started and will take approximately three weeks to complete. Once the steel is in place and prepared the concrete deck which forms the roof of the garage and the base for the quad will be poured within the next eight weeks.
Once the plaza level is completed, excavation to the next level of the garage will begin sometime early in March.
During this excavation we anticipate displacing some organic material that may produce a “rotten egg” smell. Odor control measures will be used to mitigate the smell as much as possible. The plaza level steel and concrete will also help to serve as a “cap” to mitigate odors as well.
Noise levels over the next few months should be similar to what has been experienced over the past few months with the exception of the banging noise associated with chipping the concrete guide walls which is now complete.
Some building occupants have recently expressed concern about vibration they have felt within some buildings on campus. Very specific levels for vibration tolerances were developed for this project and are being monitored by McPhail Associates, a geotechnical consultant employed by the college. Seismographic monitors are placed around campus and neighboring property to record vibration levels during construction. To date there have been no vibration levels recorded that come close to the tolerance threshold established. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns about vibrations or any other construction related activities.
One last update, we are very pleased to announce that Dominic Bisignano has joined the SOM project team as Senior Project Director.
Should you have any questions or concerns please call the project team at ext 2063 or email at dominic.bisignano@simmons.edu. We appreciate your continued cooperation and welcome any feedback regarding construction activities on campus.
