February 7, 12:30-1:30, P113: Enhancing Learning through Simulations and Visualizations: Len Soltzberg (Simmons, Chemistry) and Hubert Hohn (MIT Open Knowledge Initiative) will demonstrate how computer visualizations can be used to address the needs of math and science learners, especially students who are challenged by these subjects. Lunch provided, please call x2736 to register.
Some concepts are particularly difficult for students to understand. In math and chemistry, for example, students may be able to state a formula without fully understanding the underlying concept. Computer simulations and visualizations are designed to take students’ understanding to a deeper level. They are also an effective means for reaching out to a diverse range of students, especially visual learners. At this lunch, you will learn about strategies and resources for teaching chemistry and math concepts.
These informal lunchtime gatherings are an opportunity for faculty members to hear colleagues discuss what’s happening in their work and in the courses they teach.
