What if you could change a childs life by spending just by volunteering for one afternoon? Do you have a favorite activity? Come and share it with children! Jumpstart is hosting a Jumpstart For A Day (JFAD) on Friday, April 6 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m at the Ellis Memorial school in the South End. During this event, volunteers will run booths with interactive games and activities to spark curiosity, imagination and learning. Jumpstart works toward the day that every child enters school prepared to succeed.
Laura Mack, a current Simmons student and Jumpstart Corps Member who works with the children weekly feels that - Anyone who takes part in this, gets a chance to be a part of an amazing childs life, and creates a bond with other people from Simmons who share this same interest. I think some dedication is worth being apart of a young persons life, possibly forever.-
If you are interested in getting involved in JFAD or have any questions about the Jumpstart program, please contact Laura Mandell at laura.mandell@simmons.edu. The deadline to volunteer for Jumpstart for a Day (for just a few hours!) is March 30, 2007. Jumpstart will also have a list of activity ideas, with low material costs available.
Students can also volunteer to become corps members for the upcoming Fall Semester and work with pre-school children regularly. Simmons students can receive work-study compensation for their time with Jumpstart as a corps member.
Jumpstart is a national organization that engages young people in service to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Jumpstart pairs a caring adult and a preschool child within the classroom setting in a personal one-to-one relationship to work together on reading, language, and social skills for one year. Through this relationship, Jumpstart prepares a child for success in school, encourages caring adults to be teachers and leaders in education, and strengthens a familys involvement in its childs educational development.
