Congratulations to Charlene Hollins, our triumphant Simmons Idol winner.

The 2nd Annual Simmons Idol was a great success. Co-sponsored by Technology at Simmons College and the Simmons Gospel Choir, the event included performances by the Choir, an Imaginactment on downloading music files illegally, and a question/answer session about copyright and file sharing. The highlight of the evening was when the Gospel Choir sang a song about the woes of file sharing.

Several talented Simmons students sang their hearts out during the program. But, it was Charlene Hollins who won the Simmons celebrity judges over for her amazing performance of When a Man Loves a Women. The Simmons celebrity judges this year were Sarah Neill, Vlad Douhovnikoff, and the Simmons Shark (Rex Krajewski).

Did you know that downloading copyrighted music or movie files and not paying for them is the same as walking into Best Buy and pocketing a CD? It’s stealing and it’s illegal. When you use a file sharing program, like Kazaa or Limewire, to share music files you risk violating copyright laws, which can result in serious academic or personal consequences. Continue to enjoy music: just make sure to respect the property rights of others, including your favorite musicians. Here are sites on the Internet where you can obtain music legally:

For more information about file sharing and copyright go to http://my.simmons.edu/filesharing, or the next time you are in the Library on the main campus, stop by the Information Commons Technology Desk and pick up a Pay for the Music or Face the Music pamphlet.
