This fall, all Simmons classroom, general access, and lab Windows computers will continue to run Windows XP and Office XP. However, anyone buying a new Windows computer or Office software will buy Windows Vista and Office 2007. This year, faculty and staff office computers that are 3 years old will start being replaced with computers running Windows Vista and Office 2007. Training will be available for faculty and staff whose computers are replaced.
If you are interested in taking a look at Windows Vista and Office 2007, starting Monday, July 16, come to the first floor of the Beatley Library Information Commons and look for the “Windows Vista / Office 2007: Sneak Peek” sign. If you are in GSLIS, there is a machine in the GSLIS Tech Lab as well. These two computers have only the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, and the Office 2007 applications (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word). There are no other applications available on the test computers.
When you give Windows Vista and Office 2007 a try, we would really appreciate your thoughts about your experience. There is a short survey next to each station. Your responses will help us plan how best to prepare the community for these upgrades, which will begin this fall, and take 18 months to 2 years to complete. If you have any questions about these Sneak Peek computers, please ask someone at the Technology Desk in the Information Commons, or a GSLIS Tech Lab staff member.
