Nell Irvin Painter: Visual Artists Depict American and African-American History

Join us Thursday, October 4th at 4pm in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center to hear historian Nell Irvin Painter give a lecture, “Visual Artists Depict American and African-American History,” and be presented with the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award for 2006 for her book, Creating Black Americans. Painter is Edwards Professor Emeritus of American History at Princeton University, the President of the Organization of American Historians for 2007-2008, and author of numerous books including Southern History Across the Color Line and Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol. Her most recent book, Creating Black Americans, presents the story of people of African descent in the United States, from their American beginnings to the present time, and features a wealth of African American art. This event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by Alumnae/i Affairs, the College of Arts & Sciences Office of the Dean, The Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights, and the Departments of Africana Studies, Art and Music, History, and Women’s and Gender Studies.
