Barbara Lee Political Intern Fellowship Program Spring 2008

Barbara Lee, an alumna of Simmons College, heads the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, whose mission is to move women into the political sphere. This year the Foundation has provided money to Simmons for increasing awareness of politics as a vocation for women. The program seeks to give young women exposure to and education in the nuts and bolts of Massachusetts political leadership through practical experience and therefore, increase the amount of young women who enter the pipeline of political leadership. The grant will make possible a number of paid internships, open to students across the college, from all majors. Selected students, who will register for an eight credit internship through the Department of Political Science and International Relations, will receive a stipend of $1750 and a placement either with a legislator or with a politically active organization (non-profit, lobby, outreach organization, etc.). Professor Leanne Doherty, Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations, is the coordinator of the program.

Criteria for application:

  1. Seniors preferred, juniors considered
  2. Cover Letter
  3. Minimum 3.0 GPA
  4. Resume
  5. Simmons Transcript
  6. Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member
  7. Writing sample (2-3 pages)

Students have until November 15th to submit their application package. Please turn in your application packet to Prof. Catherine Paden in the Department of Political Science and International Relations. The second round of the process is an interview with a representative of the Foundation and Professor Doherty.

Please note: Students who are participating in the Fellows program should take POLS 212: Politics Unplugged. Students who apply to the program and have already taken POLS 212 will be given first priority. A student may still be accepted into the program if she was unable to take the course. Those students must meet with Prof. Doherty in order to plan alternative course work.

Students or faculty with any questions should contact Prof. Doherty at leanne.doherty@simmons.edu.
