FROM: Simmons Health Center
RE: Flu Vaccine
DATE: 10/19/07
The Health Center is offering free flu vaccine to all Simmons undergraduate and graduate students through the walk-in clinic at the Health Center Mondays through Fridays 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Every student benefits from receiving flu vaccine, as having the flu is very disruptive to academic studies. Students who are at high risk of having complications from flu should make a special effort to come to the Health Center to receive the vaccine. Students at high risk include:
—Anyone age 6 months and older who has chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, including asthma; —People who require regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the past year because of chronic metabolic diseases (including diabetes mellitus), kidney dysfunction, blood disorders (hemoglobinopathies) —Those with immune system problems: immunocompromised (e.g. HIV infection), immunosuppressed by medication, chemotherapy or radiation therapy; —People with certain muscle or nerve disorders (such as seizure disorders or severe cerebral palsy) that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems; —Children and teenagers (aged 6 months to 18 years) who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and therefore might be at risk for developing Reye Syndrome after influenza infection —Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season.
If you have any questions about your high risk status or about the vaccine in general, please feel free to call the Health Center at (617) 521-1002.
