Simmons College took the silver medal in the Women’s Collegiate Fours division at the Head of the Charles this past Saturday with a time of 19:27.078, a mere eight seconds behind Marquette University. Simmons recorded faster splits through the first half of the race, but Marquette edged them out in the finish.
The varsity four, consisting of Regina Yopak, Elisabeth Schwarz, Nicole Richards, Whitney Airgood, with Nicole Gallant coxing, competed in a 34 team pool. This is the best finish for Simmons in school history after capturing the bronze medal in 2006. Simmons’ second place finish grants them an automatic entry into next year’s event.
On Sunday, the varsity eight, comprised of Rachel Franchi, Jennifer Dubois, Caitlin Urciuoli, Lauren Searles, Amanda DeRosa, Melissa DeRosa, Stephanie Rubinstein, Beatriz Datangel, with Amanda Milad coxing, came in 35th out of 44 teams. With a time of 19:19.222, Simmons was just seconds away from Skidmore, University of Georgia and University of Maryland College Park.
Nikolay Kurmakov, Head Crew Coach, also made history with his boat earning the gold medal in Senior-Master Eights, while setting a course record with a time of 15:43.490.
Simmons Crew is back in action on Oct.28th as they travel to Philadelphia, PA for the Seven Sisters Regatta.
