All five fall teams wrapped up their seasons last weekend and there are many accomplishments to highlight over the past 2-plus months.
CREW
Simmons Crew competed in four races this fall, including the world-renowned Head of the Charles. In the Head of the Charles the Varisty-4 boat earned silver medal, the best in school history, with a time of 19:27.078, and the Varsity-4 placed 35th out of a 44 team pool.
Other racing highlights include the Varsity-8 first place finish and the Novice-8 second place finish in the Textile River Regatta in Lowell, Mass in late September. The Varsity-8, Novice-8, and Varsity-4 all claimed first place in the New Hampshire Championships.
The team returns to indoor practice consisting of rowing in the tanks and on the ergs for the cold winter, but they have a packed spring schedule to look forward to, which is crew’s traditional season.
FIELD HOCKEY
As fifth-seed in the North Atlantic Conference tournament, Simmons Field Hockey fell to fourth-seed Lasell College in the quarter-final match-up, 4-1, on Sat., Oct. 27. Christine Lowery (Wilder, VT) had the lone goal for Simmons late in the game.
The Sharks ended their season with a 7-9 mark, 4-3 NAC. Senior transfer Natalie West (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore transfer Austyn Joaquin (Dartmouth, Mass.) were tied with a team leading 16 points, consisting of 6 goals and 1 assist each. In conference action, Simmons was ranked fifth in both scoring average and shots per game, averaging 11.57 shots.
Joaquin and freshman Kelsey Lapenas (Southwick, Mass.) were both named NAC Field Hockey Rookie of the Week on Oct. 24 and Oct. 16, respectively. All-Conference and All-Tournament honors have not been announced yet.
SOCCER
Sixth-seed Simmons Soccer suffered a heart-breaking loss in the GNAC quarter-finals to third-seed Emerson College, 1-0, on Sat., Oct. 27. Soccer compiled a 8-9-2 record, 7-4-2 GNAC.
As a team, Soccer was ranked seventh in the conference with 2.37 goals per game. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Elliot (Amherst, NH) was fourth in the conference with an average of 6.82 saves per game. And freshman forward Allie Megna (Plymouth, Mass.) was ninth in the conference with 21 total points, five goals and 11 assists. Megna’s 11 assists ranked her second in the conference.
Soccer honors throughout the season included senior Andrea Caldwell (Braintree, Mass.) as Player of the Week on Oct. 24, Megna’s Rookie of the Week on Oct. 16, and Megna, Elliot, and senior tri-captain Sarah Daniel (Rochester, Mass.) were all named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll throughout the season. Conference honors and awards will be announced next week.
TENNIS
Simmons Tennis came up just short of their fourth consecutive GNAC championship on Sun., Oct. 28 as they fell to Suffolk, 5-4, in the finals. After receiving a bye in the first round, the second-seed Sharks beat third-seed Johnson & Wales in the quarter-finals. In the finals versus top-seed Suffolk, Simmons split the six singles matches, but fell in doubles, 3-2. Senior co-captain Alex Yudelevich (Houston, TX) posted a hard-fought victory at number one singles spot, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Fourth singles and co-captain senior Lauren Faber (Bethany, Conn.), sixth singles freshman Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.), and third doubles Faber and sophomore Jordan Borash (Marblehead, Mass.), also earned victories in the Championship.
Simmons Tennis posted an overall 11-6, 7-2 GNAC, record. Freshman standout and GNAC Rookie of the Year, Macleod was second in the overall conference singles leaders with a perfect 6-0 on the season in conference play. Yudelevich was also named GNAC Player of the Year, as was announced earlier in the week.
VOLLEYBALL
With the addition of three new schools to the GNAC, volleyball competition proved much greater in 2007. Unfortunately, this proved costly for Simmons Volleyball as they failed to make the post-season tournament by just a few matches. Volleyball ended their season at 8-14, 4-9 GNAC.
As a team, Simmons was ranked second in the conference for service aces with an average of 3.62 per game. Freshman Nicole Loring (Chester, NH) was ranked ninth in the conference with 39 service aces. Simmons placed fifth in the conference for assists per game and for kills per game. Freshman Chelsea Smith (Bedford, NH) was seventh in the conference for digs with an average of 4.84 digs per match.
Freshman Dalia Cohen (Nashua, NH) was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on Oct. 17. Conference honors and awards will be released next week.
