The 3rd Annual Simmons Rockstar competition (formerly called Simmons Idol) was held November 14 at the Quadside Cafe. Co-sponsored by Technology at Simmons College, Luna and Rockstar Energy Drink, the event included a vocal competition for Simmons Cup points, a digital music trivia contest for a prizes, and a chance to vote for Fan Favorite.
One of the many highlights of the evening was when students from Morse Hall and Back Bay Manor, which were tied for 1st place in the digital music trivia contest, competed in a dance-off to see who would win the coveted gift basket from Technology, Luna and Rockstar Energy Drink.
Several talented Simmons students sang their hearts out during the program. But, it was Stephanie Paulovich who won the judges over for her amazing vocals and acoustic guitar performance of I Will Survive. The audience selected Carley Caldas for Fan Favorite.
Did you know that downloading copyrighted music or movie files and not paying for them is the same as walking into Best Buy and pocketing a CD? It’s stealing and it’s illegal. When you use a file sharing program, like Kazaa or Limewire, to share music files you risk violating copyright laws, which can result in serious academic or personal consequences.
Continue to enjoy music: just make sure to respect the property rights of others, including your favorite musicians. Here are sites on the Internet where you can obtain music legally:
- Apple iTunes (no iPod required)
- GarageBand (free)
- Rhapsody (free or subscription)
- Ruckus Networks (free downloads for students)
- Pandora (free, customizable radio)
Read more online about file sharing and copyright, or the next time you are in the Beatley Library, stop by the Information Commons Technology Desk and pick up a Pay for the Music or Face the Music brochure.
