The Simmons College basketball team tipped off their season last weekend at the Jackie Ammons Memorial held at Peace College in Raleigh, N.C.
The Sharks opened against the host school on Friday night, and may have been suffering a bit from the long day of travel as Peace raced out to a 21-4 lead, and never looked back en route to a 77-48 win.
For the Sharks senior captain Lauren Kreckie (Braintree, Mass.) with 14 points and six rebounds. She was the only Shark in double figures in scoring.
Freshman Kristina Nardone (Winchester, Mass.) finished with seven points in her first collegiate game, while classmate Morgan Johnson (Waterbury, Conn.) chipped in with six.
On Saturday the Sharks had a quick turnaround, playing the 1 p.m. game after the nightcap the previous evening. Playing in the consolation round against Bennett College the Sharks played much better in this one. It was a back and forth affair throughout, as the largest lead for either side was seven points.
Simmons pulled within one at 49-48 on a jumper by Kreckie (11 points four rebounds). But Bennett stretched the lead back out to four on a three with 1:29 to play and the Sharks could get no closer, falling 55-51.
Nardone had a terrific second outing for the Sharks as she led the way with 20 points on 9-14 shooting, while also grabbing eight rebounds.
Kreckie was named to the All-Tournament team for the Sharks, who return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Gordon College for a non-conference affair.
