City of Boston Annual Homeless Census Each December the City of Boston’s Emergency Shelter Commission conducts Mayor Menino’s Homeless Census count of people living on the streets. The Census is an important source of information on the extent of housing and service need for the most vulnerable city residents. The Census begins at City Hall at 9p.m. on Tuesday, December 18. Teams of volunteers will cover 33 areas of the city by car or foot, keeping tally of homeless people on the street and offering transportation into shelter. You may register online at www.cityofboston.gov/shelter/census by Tuesday, December 11. If you have any questions you may contact Melissa Quirk at 617-635-4507.
Somerville Home The Somerville Home is a licensed affordable housing option for seniors and other adults in need of a supportive home environment. It is a private, non-sectarian, not-for-profit organization which has a proud history of providing quality residential services to individuals of the surrounding communities for over one hundred years. They are currently seeking compassionate and motivated volunteers to help provide social services that assist the residents in attaining and/or maintaining the highest practicable physical, mental and psycho-social well-being. Days and hours are flexible. You may contact Christine Hardy, MSW (Simmons Alumna)at 617-776-0260 or via e-mail at cgh222@hotmail.com.
The Lawrence School: Japanese English Language Learner Program The Amos A. Lawrence School in Brookline is looking for volunteers to connect with its Japanese English Language Learner program and support the students and parents involved. In particular they are seeking a Japanese speaking volunteer who can work with a Japanese second grade girl that will need one-on-one help in the classroom. They are looking for someone to work with her Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:00 to 2:00. Volunteers who can only commit to only one of the days or a few hours are also welcome. You may contact Akiko Kawai at 617-879-4374 for more information.
Boston’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Campaign This campaign is entering its seventh year of providing free tax preparation to low and moderate-income taxpayers and increasing EITC awareness. The EITC is a federal tax credit that can return up to $4,536 to qualified taxpayers. The 2007 Boston’s EITC Campaign served over 8,000 households to return $15 million dollars in refunds to taxpayers. The EITC lifts millions above the poverty line every year. They are looking for volunteers to help clients prepare tax returns, pull credit reports, and enroll in public benefits programs such as food stamps or health insurance. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply and training is provided.
