Simmons College Faculty Senate
Resolution on Ending Racism on Campus
Adopted February 20, 2008
In response to recent events on campus, we, the Faculty Senate, join with the Board, the President, and the entire Simmons community in expressing our outrage and our resolve to stand in solidarity to support any member of the Simmons community who is the target of racist acts of hatred. We resolve that Simmons must be a community where racism on any level or in any form cannot be tolerated. Education cannot occur in an unsafe environment. As an educational institution we have a special responsibility to educate, to enlighten, and to practice citizenship that embraces everyone’s human rights. Further, we commit ourselves to the following actions and responsibilities as academic officers of the College:
We resolve that it is our responsibility as educators to take active leadership and be informed role models in the teaching and practice of undoing racism and other forms of oppression while fostering open, respectful, and responsible yet difficult conversations across differences and about diversity within our learning and teaching community.
We resolve to lead in the shared responsibility of creating, sustaining and safeguarding a diverse, open, free, and respectful learning, teaching and work environment for all members of our community.
In recognition that diversity of all types is central to and enhances our educational mission and activities, and is a critical component of a vibrant intellectual community, we re-commit ourselves to the College’s diversity goals and initiatives at all levels.
