About the Faculty Showcase: This year’s Showcase is an opportunity to learn about the role technology is playing in teaching, learning, and research across the College. A series of posters will be on display to highlight innovative work being done by over fifteen Simmons College faculty members.
This Week: Candy Schwartz & Megan Fox
DEPARTMENT: GSLIS
POSTER TITLE: Second Life @ Simmons
With the advent of Second Life (SL), Candy Schwartz and Megan Fox saw an opening for Simmons to explore a cutting-edge technology before it became part of the mainstream and to have a presence in a space where competing institutions are beginning to proliferate. The Simmons Shared Academic Technology Vision (SATV) includes a focus on online learning (particularly blended learning) in which one of Simmons’ differentiators is its “high-touch” ambience, which more effectively recreates the in-classroom environment. SL offers the possibility of maintaining the personal experience and removing the “remoteness” from remote learning. As Simmons explores online learning, we need to be open to tools that will enhance the experience of the student whose hand we do not get to hold.
