Few social movements in the past 25 years have engaged young Americans so broadly as the Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) movement. This movement, which emerged in the Boston area in 1987 and is transforming American schools, endeavors to make schools safe for all students, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender expression. There are currently GSAs in 4,000 high schools across the country.
Classes will include discussions of readings, guest speakers, and training in oral history. Participants will have the opportunity to interview and videotape activists in the field, though participation in the course does not require field work.
