FENS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
The Fens Dining Expansion project is on schedule to begin the second phase of construction this week.
On Wednesday, May 14th at 2:00 pm The Fens will close for the remainder of the summer.
For further information regarding alternative dining options, menus and hours, please visit the Simmons Dining website.
Major work beginning this week includes:
- Construction of temporary walls in the College Center
- Demolition of exterior walls at The Fens and College Center
- Installation of equipment on the existing College Center roof
- Demolition of existing east wing elevator
- Installation of utilities at the loading area adjacent to the College Center
Major impacts:
- Significant noise and some vibration during demolition
- Fens dining closed
- Faculty/Staff Dining room closed
Men’s and women’s restrooms in the lower level of the Fens closed.
Please note: A temporary wall will be constructed at the base of stairs leading from the 1st floor of MCB into the Fens lobby area. Access to the Commuter Lounge will be through the Dix Scholar’s Lounge across from the Bookstore.
- Limited natural light in the College Center due to the temporary partitions
Limited seating available in the College Center, pedestrian access only
Friday evening, May 16th, a temporary wall will be installed in the College Center to allow construction of the addition to begin. All lounge seating will be removed and natural daylight in the College Center will be limited. Java City will remain open with limited hours. Entrances at both ends of the College Center and pedestrian access through the College Center will remain, but may be interrupted periodically. To ensure safety and to make pedestrian routes clear, construction barriers, signage and pathways will be clearly marked and updated continually.
East Wing elevator not available.
Beginning Monday, May 19th, the East Wing elevator will be taken out of service to allow for installation of a new elevator. The West Wing elevator will be available to provide access within the MCB.
Intermittent limits to pedestrian access to MCB from the exterior door at the loading area.
Monday, May 19th for about eight days pedestrian access to and from the College Center at the Palace Road end of the MCB will change. The stair leading to the College Center will not be available while utilities are installed below ground. The adjacent ramp will remain open at all times. The exterior door adjacent to the shipping and receiving area at the basement level may be intermittently closed to pedestrian access.
The Zip Car will be moved into the first level of the new garage adjacent to the current exit stair by the College Center.
Monday, June 2nd, Shipping and Receiving will be temporarily relocated to a trailer behind the MCB to allow their current space to be renovated. The exterior door into the basement of MCB adjacent to Shipping and Receiving will be closed to pedestrians for approximately ten days.
There will be temporary signage and fencing installed to make these changes clear to pedestrians.
If you have any immediate questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Cheryle O’Sullivan, Senior Project Manager at cheryle.osullivan@simmons.edu or ext 2285. Thank you.
