On Wednesday, May 14 from 4-7 pm, Jumpstart Corps members, staff and volunteers will work with the Head Start preschoolers, teachers and families to create the learning-based garden. Volunteers at this event will engage with children and their families, and participate in activities such as planting flowers and reviving an existing mural.

Through a grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance, Jumpstart is able to give this garden to the preschoolers and families at the Jamaica Plain Head Start.

Volunteers will work with the preschoolers and their families in the following capacities:

Planting the Garden

Volunteers will be working with the preschoolers, teachers and families to create a learning-based garden. Children at the preschool have already begun planting the seeds in preparation for the garden, and are being taught the value of environmentalism, and conservation in their classrooms.

Volunteers will be able to participate by helping the children bring potting soil to the flower boxes, planting their flowers and watering the flower boxes.

Painting a Mural

The Jamaica Plain Head Start had a garden that was put together by a former staff member, Victoria. In recognition of her work at the preschool and to commemorate the creation of a new garden, volunteers will be helping to repaint the existing mural on the side of the preschool to welcome all visitors to the Head Start and the newly acquired green space.

Support Staff

Volunteers will also be helping in the general support of the event, by helping to distribute food to all attending, assisting with some fun outdoor activities with the preschoolers and helping with the overall management of volunteer projects. Tentative Activities include: making pinwheels, face-painting, creating a classroom mural and bubbles.

To sign up to volunteer, please contact Carolyn Swanhall at swanhall@simmons.edu.

We hope you can join us in this wonderful community activity!
