From Em Claire Knowles:
Greetings, all --
A new title from one of our alumni!
HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF JAMAICA AND OTHER ISLANDS OF THE WEST INDIES
Carolyn Davis
Containing chronologies of the main islands of Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, The Bahamas, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, the Caymans, Turks & Caicos, Guyana, and Dominica, as well as six hand-illustrated maps, a comprehensive bibliography, and hundreds of dictionary entries, Davis has assembled an essential resource on the Caribbean. Covering such broad topics as the use of marijuana (ganja) by Rastafarians in their religious practices to derivations of significant words and phrases in patois, a major language of the Caribbean, to descriptions of folk tales and characters to biographical entries on Harry Belafonte and Colin Powell, this book is a significant contribution to the general reference and historiography of the West Indies. The appendices include explanations and drafts from Constitutions of many countries of the West Indies and laws concerning the status and treatment of women and children. Also included is a survey and presentation that were developed by the author during her time as a Peace Corps Volunteer concerning services provided by agencies in Jamaica to people with disabilities. This led to the creation of the Jamaica Coalition on Disability. All these factors certainly make this a useful addition to any reference library or West Indies' academic library.
