Abstract: Navigating the maze of possibilities available to institutions considering educational programs in the field(s) of advanced medical librarianship and informatics is a considerable task. The names and definitions of these areas of study, research and application vary widely and overlap. Titles preceding informatics include medical, health, biomedical, and bio-, not to mention numerous specialized varieties of nursing, public health, community health, and others. Similarly, programs in these areas are based or cross-listed in Schools of Library and Information Science, Medicine, Health Studies, Nursing, Biology, Informatics, and many more. With no single concept or definition agreed upon, the field may best be described as the science and study of the acquisition, maintenance, retrieval and applications of biomedical knowledge and information to improve patient care, education and research, through the use of computers, communications, and technology. This presentation identifies and analyzes the components and features of current U.S. programs, and suggests options available for the development and implementation of medical informatics or advanced medical librarianship at Simmons College.
