A reminder about the CE workshop to be held on the MHC campus next Sunday, October 2.
Introduction to XML and XSL Sunday, October 2, 2005 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Dwight Computer Lab 202
This full-day workshop will use lecture and hands-on approach to give you an overview of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). Topics for XML will include the basic syntax of XML, major elements of Document Type Definition (DTD), differences between XML and HTML, validation of XML files and the relationship between XML and other markup languages, such as SGML, TEI, EAD, MARC XML, etc. We will also examine the basic syntax, structure and function of XSL, and explain the use of XSL templates and XPath statements.
Actual examples and applications of XML and XSL used in libraries and academics will illustrate the concepts and main points. Through step-by-step hands-on exercises, participants will learn how to create and gather XML, DTD and XSL files, and how to display the data through a browser. By the end of the workshop, you will have a better understanding of what XML and XSL can do now and in future web development. There are no formal prerequisites, but basic knowledge of HTML is strongly suggested.
