PRINTING QUOTAS
Beginning this semester (Fall 2005) students have been allotted a print quota of
350 free pages on their Simmons ID card. There are 50 additional free pages to
allow for misprints. The total number of free prints on your card is 400 pages.
A pilot study has shown that 400 free prints will meet the needs of the
majority of students.
The volume of material printed on public printers at Simmons continues to rise dramatically. By implementing a printing quota policy, the College will decrease wasteful printing and prevent the few from abusing the privilege. This policy is environmentally sound and fiscally responsible without restricting legitimate academic needs.
With unlimited printing, some users abused the privilege and give little or no thought to paper/toner costs and environmental impact. Most colleges are faced with the same dilemma and already charged for printing.
PRINTING WITH SHARK POINTS
If the 400 free prints on your Simmons ID card are used up, CS Print will look
for Shark Points on your Simmons ID. If you do not have any Shark Points, you
will not be able to print. The lab staff will have extra cards for printing in
the Tech Lab for special circumstances. Exceeding your printing quota is not a
special circumstance. If you have forgotten your ID card, you will have to go
to the library and purchase a guest print card. Alumni will also have to
purchase guest print cards.
If you wish to use Shark Points, you must activate your Shark Card account in the Campus Card Office located in E007, or fill out a form and mail it into the ID office. The Tech Lab has copies of the form available at the desk or you can download it at http://my.simmons.edu/services/business/sharkcard/sharkcard_app.pdf. Once you have activated your card Shark Card account, you can add points (money) to it in the library at the Shark Card machine (located near the microfilm machine) or go to the ID office to add points.
When you print at the CSPrint stations, the balance that will appear will be your free print balance. At the beginning of the semester, it should be $28.00. This balance will not include any extra money that have added as Shark points for photocopies, coffee, bookstore money, etc. until your free print money has run out. Then your Shark Points will be visible at the CSPrint stations. To see the balance of your Shark Points, you can go to the vending machines in Palace Road, swipe your card, hit cancel and your balance will appear. You will also receive a monthly Shark Card statement via Simmons email.

DUPLEX PRINTING
In the lab, printer 1 is available for Duplex (double sided) printing. Ask the
Technology Research Assistants at the desk for assistance if you would like to
use this feature. Each side costs as a printed page, but you are saving paper
and room in your binders. Also, be sure to ask the Assistants how to print
several PowerPoint slides on one page.
