Curatorial Fellowships in Sarasota, Florida

The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida is seeking applicants for two fellowships, one in the Curatorial Department and the second in the Art Library.

  The Curatorial Fellowship, #4174, is designed to enable an exceptional recent graduate of a Master’s or Ph.D. program in art history or arts and museum education to prepare for a curatorial career.  During this 12-month post-graduate fellowship, the fellow will work as a special assistant to the Curator of Collections and assist in the daily operations of the curatorial office, including work on art historical and exhibition projects with particular focus on the research and reinterpretation of the permanent collection galleries.  The experience gained during this fellowship should serve as a strong foundation for a professional career in the museum field.  Excellent interpersonal, writing, and organizational skills are necessary.  Reading proficiency in a second language is also an asset.

  Candidates for the Art Library Fellowship, #4177, should be recent graduates with an MA or MLS in Library Science who wish to pursue a career in art or special librarianship. A background in art history, knowledge of foreign languages, and experience with digitization is preferred. During the term of the fellowship, the recipient will train in all library departments and will gain experience in all phases of art museum librarianship and administration. The fellow will obtain a first-hand experience in the professional practice as an art museum librarian. The fellowship encourages students to develop important mentoring relationships with other members of the library and museum staff, which may endure throughout their careers. The Ringling Museum Library, with over 65,000 volumes, is one of the largest art museum libraries in the southeast United States.  The library will move into a large new education center in late fall 2006.  The library fellow will play a major role in the implementation of the infrastructure, procedures, and programs of this new facility.

  Comprising three museums on an impressive 66-acre estate on Sarasota Bay, the Ringling complex includes an internationally recognized art collection, the Ringling mansion (Cà d’Zan), The Circus Museum and Tibbals Learning Center, and the Historic Asolo Theater.  Over $85 million in new construction and renovation has been committed for an expansion of the circus museum, a visitor’ s pavilion, an education center, new art galleries, and a new wing for Asian art.  Florida State University, the Museum’s parent institution, also operates three performing arts venues that constitute the FSU/Ringling Cultural Center.
