The 2006 Special Library Association’s Annual Conference will be held in Baltimore, MD from June 12-14, 2006. As an incentive for students to attend the conference, the Boston Chapter of SLA is sponsoring an essay contest open to LIS students interested in a career in special librarianship. A $2100 stipend will be awarded to cover costs associated with attending the conference.
The SLA 2006 Annual Conference’s theme explores how tradition and transformation converge, creating a new state for our profession.
Expanding on this theme, please comment on how this new state should be created. What will the future hold for our profession? How will we build on the past to change the future? What skills should we possess? What roles will we be playing? How should standards for these roles be determined?
In order to apply for the stipend, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a member of the SLA Boston Chapter
- Be enrolled in a graduate program in Library & Information Science at the time of application
- Submit an essay of 400-1000 words on what the theme of the conference means to you
- Submit a cover sheet providing: your name, address, phone number, email address, graduate program, name of school, and anticipated date of graduation
Previous winners of this contest are not eligible to receive this stipend
Please email your essay and cover sheet to: alicia.fasi@gmail.com
Your application must be received by April 28, 2006. The essays will be judged on content and grammar - please do not use special formatting. The essays will be judged by members of the Boston Chapter’s executive board and student relations committee.
The winner will be notified by May 12, 2006. The stipend can only be applied towards attending the annual conference in Baltimore.
