The following is information about the MTEL: Communication and Literacy Skills test. Even if you are not completing a practicum this semester or next, this is valuable information for everyone to have for planning purposes.

Here is an overview of what you need to know about the MTEL:

  1. If you haven’t done so already, you need to take the MTEL: Communications and Literacy Skills test. It is the only MTEL test you need to take to be certified as a Library Teacher in MA.

  2. You need to have submitted your passing test results to GSLIS prior to starting your first practicum.

  3. Test dates are not offered frequently. On top of that, you must sign up at least 6 weeks prior to the test date to avoid additional fees. Not to mention that it takes at least a month to receive your test scores. So, in order to be prepared to start your practicum, start planning now!

  4. Here is when the test is being offered next: http://www.mtel.nesinc.com/MA9_testdates.asp. Plan ahead!

  5. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the test content and format prior to taking the test. Information on the test and practice questions are available at http://www.mtel.nesinc.com/

  6. When you receive your test results, please submit a copy to Melissa Stevenson. Do not rely on the test service to send the scores directly to GSLIS.

  7. A final word - you will not be certified with the DOE until we have received your MTEL scores.
