The UCLA Library’s Cataloging & Metadata Center seeks energetic, creative, collaborative, flexible, and forward-thinking individuals for one to four positions that will provide non-English original cataloging and metadata for materials in all formats in the humanities and social sciences.
Position Duties
Individuals selected for these positions may report to the Head OR Assistant Head of Monographic Cataloging OR the Head of Continuing Resources Cataloging. Incumbents in Non-English Language Humanities & Social Sciences Cataloger positions are responsible for the following:
- Provide original cataloging for humanities and social sciences materials in a variety of subject areas in all formats, including electronic resources, in primary assigned language and subject areas (primary cataloging assignments will be made based on language experience).
- Create and edit bibliographic records in OCLC and the local integrated online system using the MARC21 formats, AACR2, LCRI, LCSH, and Library of Congress classification schedules.
- Contribute BIBCO/CONSER records to the national bibliographic database (OCLC) for distribution to the local integrated library system and to the UC system-wide catalog (Melvyl).
- Perform name, series, and subject authority work, and contribute name and series authority records to the national authority files.
- Catalog in additional assigned subject and language areas based on departmental needs.
- Create metadata, in support of UCLA digital library projects.
Required Qualifications
- General reading proficiency, sufficient to perform subject analysis in one or more languages. First-priority language needs are: Arabic, Armenian, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Scandinavian languages (including Finnish and Icelandic). Second-priority language needs are_: Amharic, Belarussian, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindu/Urdu, Indonesian, Romanian, Sanskrit, Serbo-Croatian, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese. Proficiency in other languages welcome.
- Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
- Knowledge of national standards, in particular, use of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules /(AACR2r), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification, MARC 21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.
- Familiarity with the principles of authority control.
- Knowledge of trends in automation as they relate to cataloging.
- Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications. Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, time, and project management skills.
- Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, including a flexible approach to working in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a production-oriented environment and to develop and adjust workflow to service needs.
- Strong service orientation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work within a complex academic organization in a creative and collaborative manner with varied user groups and capacity to function effectively in a team environment, both as a team member and independently, and to promote teamwork among colleagues.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in cataloging through a cataloging utility, such as OCLC or RLIN, in an integrated library system environment.
- Familiarity with the Library of Congress Program on Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and experience creating or contributing BIBCO and NACO records.
- Experience creating or maintaining CONSER records.
- Experience cataloging continuing resources.
- Knowledge of non-MARC descriptive metadata standards such as Dublin Core.
- Experience in the use of electronic cataloging support tools such as
Classification Web and Cataloger’s Desktop on the Web.
- Subject experience and/or graduate coursework in humanities or social sciences disciplines.
- Demonstrated leadership potential.
General Information Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees. Librarians at UCLA are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). In addition to professional competence and quality of services within the library in the primary job, advancement in the librarian series requires professional involvement and contributions outside of the library, University and community service, and scholarly activities.
