Asst. Director, Boston Library Consortium

The Boston Library Consortium, Inc. (BLC) an organization representing 19 academic and research libraries in New England (www.blc.org), has an opening effective August 15, 2007 for the Assistant Director position.

The Consortium is engaged in a number of exciting initiatives including a digitization project in collaboration with the Open Content Alliance. Other BLC projects include cooperative collection development, enhanced resource sharing through a series of initiatives, coordinating staff development programs and providing opportunities for continuing education for the BLC constituency. The BLC is also involved in acquiring and licensing electronic resources, encouraging open access to scholarship, and other activities to leverage the resources of the member libraries.

The Assistant Director works closely with the Executive Director and with representatives from the member institutions to support BLC programs and projects. The Assistant Director may assist or lead program planning, project management, and coordination of BLC initiatives.

This is a full-time position and requires an individual who has high energy, is self-directed, flexible, and works well in a collaborative environment.

The BLC Office is located in the heart of Copley Square in the Boston Public Library. The staff includes: the Executive Director, Assistant Director, Office Manager and Administrative Assistant.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Track, analyze and report on the cost trends and benefits of various BLC activities
  • Facilitate the implementation of the BLC’s programmatic activities among the BLC member libraries
  • Assist in the planning of training sessions, workshops, and other programs to support the BLC’s staff development goal
  • Develop and manage information tools in collaboration with the Office Manager to track consortial statistics for licensing, resource sharing, etc.
  • Coordinate the activities of the BLC teams, task forces, and communities of interest
  • Serve as BLC Office liaison and consultant to BLC teams and task forces
  • Negotiate with vendors for licensing terms and in collaboration with the Office Manager coordinate final purchasing of electronic resources
  • Communicate effectively with librarians and staff in the BLC community, consortia, and with the vendor community
  • Attend regional and national association meetings
  • Maintain administrative files and data.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited library school or an equivalent combination of relevant graduate study and experience
  • Minimum of three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an academic/research library or in a consortial setting
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology in current and emerging areas
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with consortial issues
  • Resource sharing and/or reference experience
  • Experience in managing contracts and licenses

Compensation:
Competitive and commensurate with experience. The Consortium benefits include flexible spending accounts, health and dental plans, TIAA-CREF, and annual vacation leave.

Membership: The nineteen members of the BLC are: Boston College, Boston Public Library, Boston University, Brandeis University, Brown University, Marine Biological Laboratory/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, MIT, Northeastern University, State Library of Massachusetts, Tufts University, University of Connecticut, University of New Hampshire, University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Massachusetts Worcester (Medical Center), Wellesley College, and Williams College.
