The Brooklyn Collection: Project Coordinator

The Project Coordinator is a two-year project funded by the New York Life Foundation, to bring twelve 8th grade classes each year into contact with the Brooklyn Public Library/Brooklyn Collection’s unique array of historical documents about the borough and its diverse neighborhoods. The program will introduce inner city children between the ages of 13 and 14 to primary historical resources and research.
The Project Coordinator will have the principal responsibility for the everyday running of the project.
Responsibilities:
Forming liaisons with participating schools and collaborating with teachers to select topics of interest for initial tours of the collection
Providing workshops on the use of primary resources: City Directories, photographs, newspapers, maps and ephemera
Preparing materials for participating classes
Writing and co-ordinating production of the Young Learner’s Guide to the Brooklyn Collection and the Brooklyn Collection Guide to Class and Exit projects
Helping students work on group and individual projects to enable them to incorporate relevant primary documents
Providing workshops to teachers in participating schools
Training librarians and Technical Resource Specialists in local branches in the use of collection materials and online resources
In conjunction with teachers and Brooklyn Collection staff, creating an exhibition based on student work at the end of the project, and organizing a final event
Requirements
BA/BS degree in Education or related field
2-3 years teaching experience in a middle school or high school
Master’s degree in a relevant subject area preferred
Education Administration experience preferred
Coordination grants or special projects experience a plus
This two-year position will end in July 2009 with a possibility of renewal
