Digital Projects Production Specialist (part time, temporary)

The Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) seeks a part-time digital projects production specialist to work 14 hours per week from September 2007 through 30 September 2008 on tasks relating to the creation of digital images and web captions of about 100 manuscript maps and other historical materials. Although the primary focus will be the production of digital images for presentation at the MHS website, the production specialist may assist with additional digital production, logistical, and web delivery tasks. This is a temporary, grant-funded position.

This position is funded by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to digitize approximately 100 manuscript maps of Massachusetts towns. By completing this project, and presenting the materials via the MHS website, MHS will make images of difficult-to-find, often unique, historical maps available to the widest possible audience.

Duties: The production specialist will assist with the production of the content (digital images and descriptive metadata) for the website, create the administrative metadata required to track the original archival materials, and manage the master images according to existing documentation and procedures. Tasks include helping to coordinate work with the outside vendor (who will create master images of oversize materials), creating master images of standard-size materials, creating derivative images of all master files, reviewing file names, checking image quality, and creating and checking metadata. The production specialist will follow and refine documentation about production tasks. The production specialist will report to the digital projects coordinator.

Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s degree, good computer skills, strong attention to detail, demonstrated ability to follow specific guidelines and instructions, familiarity with image editors, ability to work easily with other people, some familiarity with primary sources, and an interest in libraries, archives and history.

Preferred:Experience with digital imaging in a professional setting, web content management systems, and knowledge of metadata standards (Dublin Core, MARC, EAD, etc.). Coursework in library and archival science is desirable.

Salary: $18.00 per hour.

Application procedure: Please mail (or email) a letter of application, resume, and the names of three references to Nancy Heywood, Digital Projects Coordinator, Massachusetts Historical Society, 1154 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02215 (or nheywood@masshist.org). Due to the nature of the Society’s collections, the MHS reserves the right to conduct a background check on all new employees.

Availability: Review of applications is ongoing and will continue until the position is filled. This position is currently open and is funded through 30 September 2008.
