THE BOSTON ATHENAEUM - CIRCULATION/READER SERVICES ASSISTANT
The Boston Athenaeum is seeking a full time (35 hours/week). Circulation/Reader Services Assistant, to assist the Head of Circulation in managing a busy department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Circulation of books and other materials to members
- Provide Reader Services such as recommending books, helping readers locate appropriate materials, and taking book reserve requests
- Answer switchboard and assist in all aspects of managing Circulation
- Work with the Reference Department to provide book mailing and interlibrary loans
- Interpret the Athenaeum, its history, collections, and services to members, visitors, and guests
- Maintain new book shelves for readers
- Participate in selection of new books and serials for library collections
- Communicate members’ concerns to appropriate departments
- Train and work with Volunteers at circulation desk
- Retrieve and return books to shelves; distribute books to be shelved to other floors
- Work on prescribed Saturdays on a rotation basis and on Monday evenings
- Serve as liaison to the Library?s book discussion groups
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Arts in humanities
- Excellent interpersonal skills for working with library users, visitors, guest researchers, students, and staff
- Must be an avid reader with a strong interest in staying current with new books
- Computer skills necessary
- Experience with automated library systems preferred
- Website management skills preferred
Position available: Immediately
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
