Access Services Assistant
Access Services (Collection Maintenance, Circulation, Document Delivery, Inter-library Loan)

Immediate Supervisors: Circulation/ILL Librarian and Document Delivery Librarian

An Access Services Assistant performs a variety of tasks associated with stack maintenance, document delivery, circulation and event management.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Includes approximate percentage of time spent on each):

Perform Collection Maintenance tasks (30%) including, but not limited to:

  • Shelving Library materials: Scanning collection barcodes to document usage; Sorting materials on book trucks by location and call number; Shelving materials in assigned locations; Identifying and communicating book repair and collection shift needs to the Access Services Librarian.
  • Shelf reading: Maintain assigned location(s) in call number order.
  • Assisting with collection shifts as needed.
  • Assisting with collection relabeling and installation of book supports.

Fill copy orders. (30%)

  • Receiving copy orders by telephone, in person, by fax and e-mail; recording and tracking orders online.
  • Retrieving materials to be copied; using photocopier and/or microfiche reader/printer.
  • Preparing orders for pick-up or delivery; communicating with customer.
  • Counting materials used for photocopying by scanning barcodes.

Staff circulation desk. (35%)

  • Retrieve materials to fill patron requests received via phone and email.
  • Check in, check out, renew and place holds for patrons.
  • Utilize the Library’s online catalog, circulation module and membership database in the performance of circulation-related tasks.
  • Answer general questions about the collection and Library services.
  • Direct inquiries to reference staff or others as appropriate.
  • Assist Library patrons with use of photocopiers.
  • Help patrons locate, view and print from microforms.
  • Perform tasks related to opening and closing the Library.

Assist Access Services Librarian with event-related tasks (5%) including, but not limited to:

  • Ensuring timely mailing of informational materials (requires operation of mail machine and delivery to post office).
  • Assisting with event setup and takedown (moving chairs, tables, signs, computer equipment, etc.).

Position Requirements:

Education: Library science student preferred.

Experience: Prior law library experience using Innovative’s Millennium modules highly desirable.

Knowledge and Skills:
Patron service work ethic required. Must be detail oriented and able to follow instructions. Ability to work independently and maintain harmonious working relationships. Ability to work well with frequent interruptions. Knowledge of basic computer skills including OPAC searching. Must be comfortable with frequent telephone and computer use.

Contact with Others/Scope of Authority: Frequent contact with Library members, visitors and staff.

Working Conditions:
The Social Law Library is an air-conditioned smoke-free facility. Position requires stamina to load and push book trucks and work on one’s feet for periods of up to three hours at a time. Job entails some moderate lifting and furniture moving.

Hours: This 20 hour per week part-time position is to be worked in shifts of not less than 3 hours between 8 am and 8 pm Monday through Friday. Specific days and hours to be mutually agreed upon with the Access Services Librarian. Regular attendance is required; a fixed schedule must be maintained.

Compensation: $11.50 per hour
