Forbes Library: Information Services Librarian/Part-Time
20 hours/benefited
Responsibilities:
Work is performed independently with guidance from the Information Services Coordinators through ongoing review and coordination of plans and programs.
Provide information services to all library patrons as part of the Information Services Team. This may include, but is not limited to:
- Respond to reference and information search requests via phone, email and in person.
- Monitor and assist patrons with electronic resources, indexes, reference, and circulating collections.
- Conduct online searches of the Internet and electronic databases.
- Participate in collection development and maintenance: Develop digital and print resources to enhance patrons’ information-seeking experience; Identify and resolve equipment problems involving copiers, printers, microfilm machines and computers; Participate in library committee work and contribute to cooperative efforts; Teach patrons the use of technology and information resources one-on-one and in groups; Attend professional workshops and seminars, read professional literature, self-train with information sources and techniques on an ongoing basis; Perform special Information Services duties and projects.
- May be required to supervise paraprofessional, work study, intermittent part-time and volunteer staff.
- Provide reference services for arts & music, local history, genealogy, special collections of photographs and fine arts, including photo research and reproduction services.
- Help ensure that staff and patrons follow library policies to protect patrons’ rights and library materials.
Work Environment
- Considerable public and staff contact and rapid turnover at service desk or, when not at service desk, in shared office environment.
- Will be moving about the library to serve patrons where needed, on different floors of the building, and interacting with all library departments.
- Sometimes lifts and/or transports objects weighing 5 to 20 pounds; pushes or pulls carts loaded with materials. Retrieves and/or shelves objects weighing 5 to 20 pounds from all shelving levels.
- Possible exposure to dust, newsprint, etc. in book stack areas
- Extended periods of standing or sitting may be required.
Hours
Salaried part-time, typically working 20 hours per week with occasional variations. Must work Monday evenings (1-9), Tuesday (1-5) and three out of four — 5-hour Saturdays. Remaining hours to be made up on Monday or Wednesday mornings. Will also be expected to
cover Saturday hours in case of scheduling emergency.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- MLS from an ALA accredited school. MLS/ALA candidate may be considered with adequate experience.
- Experience working with the public.
- Excellent technology skills and knowledge of current and emerging information/library technologies including basic equipment troubleshooting.
- Commitment & ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Strong commitment to providing excellent public service.
- Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail, professional attitude, reliable with superior organizational ability.
- Flexibility, energy, and enthusiasm.
Knowledge of:
- Professional practices, procedures and techniques of library service, particularly as they apply to adults.
- Types of reference sources (general, specialized, electronic and print) and how to use them in the reference process.
- Books, media, publishing, and review media.
Preferred:
- Experience working in a public library.
- Familiarity with CWMars and III.
- Experience with Web 2.0 elements including Wiki, blogs, etc.
- Experience in information instruction.
- Familiarity with the Pioneer Valley.
Salary: Grade 8, $15.75 per hour. Health insurance, sick time and prorated vacation time.
