Job: Public Library Director
Description: Part-time, 24 hours with benefits
Includes regularly scheduled desk hours, some evening and weekend hours
Shutesbury’s MN Spear Memorial Library is a small, friendly heavily-used library which was recently awarded a state planning grant to study the feasibility of increasing library space and services. We seek a candidate who shows initiative and flexibility, models good customer service practices, promotes a welcoming environment at the library, and is passionate about libraries.
The Director will oversee day-to-day library operations and activities, including the C/WMARS automated circulation system, positive relationships with patrons of all ages, and maintenance of the library building and grounds. Long-term activities will include participation in the librarys long-range plan, development of programming, and enhancing the library as a community center.
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
- Provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere which encourages community use and support of the library.
- Develop positive relationships with patrons of all ages.
- Identify needs and problems as they arise, and communicate to the Board of Trustees actions taken.
- Attend Board of Trustees meetings and keep the Board informed of current issues and developments related to library services.
- Interpret policies and establish procedures for policy implementation.
- Present budget recommendations to Board of Trustees; manage the approved budget; maintain financial records.
- Supervise library assistants and volunteers.
- Maintain librarys collection by selecting new and current materials and weeding when necessary.
- Utilize the resources of the Western Mass. Regional Library System, participate in professional development, and attend educational and organizational meetings.
- Complete necessary reports such as circulation statistics, financial and planning documents.
- Promote library services through town newsletters and local newspapers.
- Represent the library at municipal, civic and other groups regarding the objectives and activities of the library.
Requirements include:
- knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions and administration.
- ability to speak and write effectively and clearly.
- ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Board members, subordinates, Town officials and the general public.
- general knowledge of computers and use of the Internet and other online services.
ability to multi-task in a sometimes busy and noisy environment.
Minimum of a Bachelors degree required.
- Experience with and/or interest in future building project preferred.
- Experience with the C/WMARS network preferred.
- Candidates with a Masters in Library Science or those working towards an MLS are especially encouraged to apply.
