TEMPORARY CONTRACT POSITION – INTERVIEWER

Randi Korn & Associates, Inc., a museum consulting firm, is working with the Isabel Gardner Museum to study visitors’ experiences in their evening programs. We are looking to hire 3 to 4 English-speaking graduate students or museum professional (or upper level undergraduates) to conduct interviews with adult visitors at the Museum.

The interviewers will be paid $16/hour. Interviews will take place every third Thursday night (5 to 9 pm) of each month (Nov 15, Dec 20, Jan 17, Feb 21, March 20, April 17, May 15), until we reach our target sample size. We are asking for applicants who can commit to at least four shifts (including the training), as we estimate it will take 5 to 6 shifts to conduct all the interviews.

The training will take place from 4 pm to 9 pm on Thursday, November 15, 2007. Attendance at the training is mandatory.

We will provide some training, but experience conducting in-depth interviews is preferred. Other desired characteristics are listed below:

• Data collectors should be personable and outgoing. Interviewing requires approaching visitors and asking to speak with them about their museum experiences.

• Data collectors should be able to follow directions. The process for selecting respondents and interviewing includes specific instructions which must be followed to ensure methodological reliability.

• Data collectors should be neutral. If a data collector’s personal beliefs or opinions are revealed through their manner, clothing, or comments, the interview will be affected and the data compromised.

• Data collectors should be dependable. Each project follows a schedule based on data quotas and therefore every day of data collection is essential. It is important that data collectors show up on time, for the days which they are scheduled, and call ahead of time in case of emergencies or illness.

• In-depth interviewers need to be excellent listeners. In-depth interviewing requires understanding the objectives of the project, and probing respondents on their thoughts and opinions with respect to these objectives.

• In-depth interviewers should be patient. In-depth interviewing requires very little talking, and interviewers need to allow respondents the time and space to respond thoughtfully to questions.

• In-depth interviewers need to be perceptive when listening, knowing when to probe respondents further with a question and when to guide a respondent back to the focus of the interview.

Interested students should email their résumé and contact information to:
