Dear students,
This email includes updates for the Boston campus Spring 2008 course schedule. Classes covered in this email are:
LIS 458: Database Management
LIS 461: Multimedia Technology for Information Management
LIS 475: Organizational/Information Ethics
LIS 488: Technology for Information Professionals
LIS 531M: Descriptive Cataloging
Course descriptions are available for all of the above at: http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/courses/descriptions/. All changes are reflected at http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/courses/schedules/08/bos_08_sp.shtml and should be reflected in AARC by Tuesday.
I’d like to start off by saying congratulations to Professors Rong Tang and Sheila O. Denn, who have just learned that they received an award from the President’s Fund for Faculty Excellence. The grant will support their proposal of the project, “User Based Question Answering: An Exploratory Study of Community Generated Information Exchange in Yahoo!Answers.” This is wonderful news on an exciting project; it does, however, affect a couple of classes.
There has been some other movement as well, so please continue reading for course cancellations, changes, and additions. A second note regarding classes being offered in the Computer Science (CS) department follows.
1. COURSE CANCELLATIONS
LIS 475-01/01N (Wednesdays, 9:30-12:30; Whorley) has been cancelled
2. COURSE CHANGES
LIS 458-01/01N (Mondays, 2:30-5:30; Denn) has been cancelled, but I am happy to say that Adjunct Professor Michael Leach has agreed to step in so that the class can still be offered this spring. Yes, that’s the good news. The slightly-less-good news is that the only time that works well for both him and the rest of the GSLIS schedule is Friday nights. For those of you who absolutely need to take this class in the spring, I hope this option works; for those of you who can’t swing it, note that there is a database class being offered through the CS department.
LIS 488-04/04N (Thursdays, 9:30-12:30; Tang) has been cancelled. Two sections of LIS 488 are being added, one on Fridays, one on Saturdays (see below for details)
LIS 531M-01/01N (Joudrey) has been moved from Thursday nights to Tuesday afternoons.
3. COURSE ADDITIONS
LIS 461-01/01N (Chen) has been added as a January short course. It will meet from 9-5 on January 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9.
LIS 488-05/05N (Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Chen) has been added. This class will meet on six Fridays in the spring: February 8, 22, March 7, April 4, April 18, and May 2.
LIS 488-06/06N (Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Chen) has been added. This class will meet on six Saturdays in the spring: February 9, 23, March 8, April 5, 19, and May 3.
Please note: I am also hoping to have news soon on a section of IDIV 501 as well as additional sections of LIS 438 and LIS 404 but didn’t want to hold this email back any longer. With the exception of those items — and barring any unforeseen circumstances — the Spring 08 BOS campus schedule is now closed. Once I have more details on those I will let you know. For now, however, please feel free to email me at jennifer.doyle@simmons.edu if you have any questions.
Best,
Jen
