Cataloging and Metadata Librarian

Responsibilities: Perform original and copy cataloging of material in all formats including print, electronic, microform, DVDs and CDs. Perform routine and complex database maintenance of the library’s integrated library system including providing authority control. Maintain coverage load to provide up to date electronic holdings information. Share responsibility of systems management with the Technical Services Librarian. Work with the Serials Assistant to provide holdings information to Serials Solutions. Work closely with the Collection Development Librarian to update Westlaw and Lexis holdings in the catalog and to assist in cataloging e-documents. Work closely with the Computer Services Librarian to maintain and update the OPAC interface. Work with both technical services and public services to develop and implement local policies and procedures. Assist with updating department statistics. Maintain course reserves. Supervise one full-time employee. Responsible for the technical services department in the absence of the Technical Services Librarian. Perform other duties as assigned including special summer projects. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian is expected to participate in the professional life of the library and stay current with developments in the various areas of technical services.

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian reports to the Technical Services Librarian. 35 hour work week. Competitive salary. Excellent benefits.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school; experience in cataloging; working knowledge of AACR2R, LC classification and LC subject headings, MARC formats, Dublin Core Metadata and OCLC/Connexion. Experience with an automated integrated library system; strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, outstanding communication skills, strong service orientation and ability to work well independently and with others. Proficiency in standard PC applications and ability to quickly learn new technologies. Desired qualifications include familiarity with legal material and experience with Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium system and Serials Solutions.

Background: New England School of Law Library, located in Boston’s Theater District, is an independent law school established in 1908 as Portia Law School. The Law School offers day and evening classes and has an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students. New England School of Law is ABA accredited and a member of the Association of American Law Schools. The Law Library has approximately 355,000 volumes and 15 full time staff.
