Collections Assistant
The Rhode Island Historical Society is seeking an energetic Collections Assistant to work part-time as a member of a team in a dynamic work environment. The RIHS was founded in 1822 and is dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing the history of Rhode Island with Rhode Islanders and researchers around the world.
The collections consist of books, newspapers, manuscripts, photographs, maps, film, architectural drawings and audio recordings stored in the Library and 3-dimensional objects such as furniture, textiles, paintings, and ceramics displayed and stored at the John Brown House Museum.
The Collections Assistant works under the supervision of the Special Collections Curator at the Library to assist with processing, cataloging, and re-housing manuscripts and visual materials (photographs, maps, drawings, film, etc.).
Other duties include retrieving materials from the closed stacks that have been requested by researchers and delivering them to the Reading Room in the Library; filling in occasionally in the Reading Room to cover the Special Collections reference desk and assist researchers using special collections materials; creating photocopies of materials requested by researchers; and maintaining the inventory of archival supplies.
Requirements: Minimum B.A. in a humanities field. Experience and/or training in library/archives procedures and demonstrated proficiency in word processing and database programs and the ability to lift 40 pound boxes are required. Coursework in archival management, cataloging and American history is preferred.
Hours: Average of 21.5 hours per week
Work Schedule: Wednesdays, 9-5; Thursdays 10-5; Fridays, 9-5; second
Saturday of every month 10-5
Salary: $13/hour
Benefits: Health care insurance, sick time, vacation time, holidays and personal days,TIAA-CREF after completing twenty-four (24) months of employment
