Responsibilities and duties for school library media specialist include the following areas:
Library management: supervising daily work-flow of a full-time assistant, scheduling and coordinating library space and resources
Collection development duties include selecting and purchasing all books, magazines, and other library materials to meet student interest and staff teaching needs while staying within the library budget. Deal with censorship issues/challenges that may arise. Categorize and label books with genre labels, etc. as they come in to the library to make sure they are easily found and identified by students who come looking for specific genres. Write grants and collaborate with teachers on grant-writing based on curriculum topics to increase library resources whenever possible.
Teaching: write lesson plans and teach library research skills class/bibliographic instruction to students. Teach other classes in collaboration with classroom teachers. Do book talks for teachers at their request on genres being covered in English classes. Get book carts together for teachers to use on curriculum topics both in classrooms and in the library.
Technology: manage computer automation system and a number of computers in the library computer lab. Catalog books as needed, import MARC records into library book database, troubleshoot any cataloging issues or problems.
Reading promotions: Create and run fun reading programs that motivate students to read more library books, run a bookfair that is a very profitable fund-raiser and gets students very excited to shop for books. Reader’s advisory conversations with students to help connect them with the right book to match their interests and abilities.
Effective immediately.
Salary is commensurate with experience and education per teacher contract. Must be certified for school library work.
