Reference Archivist, State Archives - Boston, MA

The Massachusetts Archives, a division of the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, is accepting applications for a position as a Reference Archivist. This is a permanent, full-time position and will include some Saturday hours.

Working under the direction of the Reference Supervisor, the Reference Archivist is one of a team of five archivists providing reference service for the State Archives. The reference staff assists nearly 8,000 researchers a year and also answers telephone, mail, e-mail, and fax inquiries. Reference archivists may also work with the curatorial staff to process archival collections and prepare or update finding aids.

Qualifications:
Masters degree in archival management, library science, history, or related field essential.
One year of archival work experience, especially in reference, preferred.
Knowledge of Massachusetts history and government useful.

Required skills:
Interpersonal skills necessary to meet and provide direct service to the public.
Oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and concisely.
Ability to be organized and to work accurately.
Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and carrying 30 pound boxes.
Computer literacy, with knowledge of Access databases.
Strong commitment to public service.
