Folks:

The Small Public Libraries Circuit Riders grant through WMRLS is a great opportunity to gain some experience. See below for how to apply.

Best, Terry

The WMRLS Small Library Committee has hired Becky Marconi as Project Coordinator for the 2-year “Together We Thrive: Small Town Libraries Work As One” LSTA grant awarded to the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System (WMRLS) by the Board of Library Commissioners. This project is a direct offshoot from the findings of the WMRLS Small Library Study and feedback gleaned from roundtables in the fall of 2006.

It will provide trained “Circuit Riders” who will travel to libraries that request assistance with important projects they just never seem to get time to complete or even begin. Work will include weeding their collections, making more efficient use of their space, cataloging efforts to enable future automation, and doing excellent public relations. A major recommendation of the Study was that “small public libraries must not be seen as standalone institutions. An effort must be made to transform the small libraries into a network of service outlets.” Toward this end, an especially innovative component of this project will be to bring libraries together to work on joint projects, such as coordinating the development of their collections, sharing performers, and possibly even sharing staff. There are no limits to the areas of cooperation this grant can address!

We are also looking for people to serve as Circuit Riders (yes, they will be paid, and their mileage will be reimbursed). We want people who have experience in certain areas of library work, and have the time to devote to this project.

To apply to be a Circuit Rider, please go to http://www.wmrls.org/wmrls/job2.html for more information and for details on how to apply. We are all looking forward to achieving great things on behalf of small public libraries and their users!

If you want to reach Becky to discuss this project, her schedule at WMRLS Headquarters is 9:15 to 4:15, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Her phone number is (800) 282-7755 or (413) 665-9898, both at extension 123, where you can talk to her or leave her a message. Her email address is bmarconi@wmrls.org.
