Digitization Assistant, BU School of Theology Library

The School of Theology is Boston University’s founding school (1839) and a member of the Boston Theological Institute. The School of Theology Library holds a considerable research collection, which focuses on materials related to practical theology, liturgy, missions, hymnology, and the history of the United Methodist Church (the library is its New England depository).

The digitization assistant would provide weekday, part-time (10-15hr/wk) support for a short-term (until the end of June) digitization project at the library. Possibility of extending the project exists, but cannot be guaranteed. Flexibility in establishing work schedule: between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

The digitization assistant’s primary tasks would involve operating scanning equipment and editing scanned images to maximize quality. Secondary tasks would most likely include organizing image files, creating metadata, and contributing to project development, depending on applicant’s abilities. The digitization assistant would work directly with and report to Cataloging Department staff.

Requirements: B.A. or higher, student currently in an accredited master of library sciences program, previous library experience, ability to work with computers. Must have completed some coursework in digital libraries, digital information services and provider, and/or digital preservation of information resources. One or more of: computer science background, photography background, or completed coursework in database management and electronic records management would be preferred.

Rate: $13/hr
