Library Web and Systems Developer
Bates College invites applications for the position of Library Web and Systems Developer. Founded in 1855, Bates is one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, with a long history of commitments to principles of human dignity and diversity. Since its inception, Bates has been a coeducational, nonsectarian, residential college with special commitments to academic rigor and to programs and opportunities by qualified learners of all backgrounds.
Summary and Scope of Position
Provides support for the work of the Systems and Catalog Librarian in further integrating the Library catalog and the Library web site. This is a 1-year, grant-funded position with a salary of $50,000. This position will examine current functionality and services originating from catalog data to determine if additional automation or other streamlining of web-page creation is possible. This position will also survey existing products and programming possibilities to add new functionality to expose catalog data on the Library website. Results of this work could include, for example, making recommendations for software purchases, implementing software products, coordinating programming projects with the College’s Internet Software Services team, or completing small-scale programming projects. Throughout this process, this position will solicit user input and create web pages according to information architecture, graphic design, and usability standards.
Essential Job Functions
- Conduct user studies on the recently redesigned catalog (Innovative Interfaces, with WebPacPRO, WebBridge, and Electronic Resources Management implemented) and make recommendations for revisions.
- Determine how to further automate the generation of information currently coming from the catalog (e.g., lists offered in the “Browse Catalog” section of the catalog: http://ladd.bates.edu/) and how to expand functionality (e.g., offering canned searches for documentary videos) to serve user needs.
- Determine how to expand the current use of Innovative’s Electronic Resources Management module (http://abacus.bates.edu/Library/indexINDEXES.shtml) to enable simultaneous searching of database subjects and genres.
- Determine how to automate the creation of those portions of the Subject Guides (http://abacus.bates.edu/Library/resources/subject/) that use information contained in bibliographic and resource records.
- Using the modular capabilities of the College’s content management system, ICMS, create web pages from which users will access the new and revised functionality as well as templates for future page creation.
Additional Job Functions
- Research and make recommendations on how to bring Web 2.0 features (e.g., faceted searching, user tagging) to our users by considering open source software (e.g., XC: eXtensible Catalog), proprietary software (e.g., Innovative’s Encore), and in-house programming options. Coordinate exploration of Web 2.0 functionality with Colby and Bowdoin libraries.
Required Qualifications
- Experience designing web pages.
- Familiarity with XML, MARC record structure, and AACR2 cataloging rules.
- Familiarity with library automation systems.
- Knowledge of usability issues related to graphic design and writing style for web pages.
- Excellent communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience conducting usability studies.
- Graphic design experience.
- Familiarity with the Innovative Interfaces library automation system.
- Familiarity with content management systems.
- Studies and experience in the field of Library or Information Science.
