The Boston Public Library is looking for pre-professional, part-time (15 hrs./week) help in their digital imaging studio.

Municipal regulations require the applicant to reside in the city of Boston upon the first day of work.

Position Title: Digital Imaging Production Technician – part-time (15 hrs./week)

Salary Range: $10 hourly

I. Job Purpose:

The Digital Imaging Production Technician will aide in the creation of high quality digital images from a wide variety of original sources to support the growth of a robust digital image collection and the goals of various digital initiatives promulgated throughout the Library.

II. Reports To:

Digital Imaging Production Manager

III. Duties:

• Registers and tracks BPL collection materials brought to studio for digitization.

• Digitally reformats items from the collections of the BPL using the most appropriate hardware devices, software applications, and imaging techniques available in the digital imaging studio.

• Performs post-capture image processing such as cropping, rotating, global color corrections as part of pre-ingest activities.

• Adheres to strict quality control guidelines, standards, and workflows assuring the long-term versatility and sustainability of digital image assets.

• Monitors and maintains routine calibrations and preference settings on monitors, input devices, and software applications.

• Assures proper naming and placement of image files within local and institutional network structures.

• Transcribes metadata into spreadsheets and databases.

IV. Qualifications:

• High level of organizational skill and consistent, meticulous attention to detail.

• Background in photography or other visual arts.

• Knowledge of basic preservation and handling techniques for rare and fragile items.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

• Ability to balance production deadlines with rigorous quality and organizational benchmarks.

VI. Preferred Qualifications

• Completed or enrolled in MLS degree program.

• Cross-platform experience with image capture applications and advanced image editing techniques within Adobe Photoshop.

• Imaging experience within a library, museum, archives, or other cultural repository.

• Excellent eye for color and contrast.

• Familiarity of standard metadata schemas and content standards such as MARC, METS, Dublin Core, VRA Core, Getty and Library of Congress authorities and vocabularies.

VII. Requirements

• Must be a Resident of the city of Boston upon first day of hire.

• Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) check with the City of Boston.
