Position Title: Digital Library Assistant – part time (15 hours/week)

Salary Range: $11 hourly

I. Job Purpose:

The Digital Library Assistant will aide in the creation of digital objects from a wide variety of original sources to support the growth of robust digital collections and the goals of various digital initiatives promulgated throughout the Library.

II. Reports To:

Digital Services Manager

III. Primary duties:

  • Creates and captures descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata for ingestion into databases and repositories.

  • Performs basic preservation and archival processes on pre-digitized collections.

  • Registers and tracks BPL collection materials brought to studio for digitization.

  • Digitally reformats items from the collections of the BPL using the most appropriate hardware devices, software applications, and imaging techniques available in the digital imaging studio.

  • Performs post-capture image processing such as cropping, rotating, global color corrections as part of pre-ingest activities.

  • Adheres to strict quality control guidelines, standards, and workflows assuring the long-term versatility and sustainability of digital object.

  • Monitors and maintains routine calibrations and preference settings on monitors, input devices, and software applications.

  • Assures proper naming and placement of image files within local and institutional network structures.

IV. Qualifications:

  • Completed or enrolled in MLS degree program from ALA accredited university.

  • High level of organizational skill and consistent, meticulous attention to detail.

  • Cross-platform proficiency with Office and Adobe CS components.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with professional imaging software and hardware.

  • Knowledge of basic preservation and handling techniques for rare and fragile items.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Ability to balance production deadlines with rigorous quality and organizational benchmarks.

V. Preferred qualifications

Familiarity of standard metadata schemas and content standards such as MARC, METS, Dublin Core, VRA Core, Getty and Library of Congress authorities and vocabularies.

VII. Requirements

  • Must be a Resident of the city of Boston upon first day of hire.

  • Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) check with the City of Boston.
