The 2008 Special Library Association’s Annual Conference will be held in Seattle, WA, from June 15 - 18. As an incentive for students to attend the conference, the SLA Boston Chapter is sponsoring an essay contest open to LIS students. A stipend will be awarded to cover costs associated with attending the conference, including travel, lodging, meals, registration (including paid events and programs) and pre-conference workshops.

The SLA 2008 Annual Conference’s theme is “Breaking Rules: Building Bridges”. Expanding on that theme, please use the essay to comment on how attending the SLA conference in Seattle and its theme will support your studies in library and information science. What do you see in your future? What skills will you need? How will “breaking rules” and “building bridges” impact the role of the special librarian?

In order to apply for the stipend, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a member of the SLA Boston Chapter
  2. Be enrolled in a graduate program in Library & Information Science at the time of application
  3. Submit an essay of 400-1000 words on what the theme of the conference means to you
  4. Submit a cover sheet providing: your name, address, phone number, email address, graduate program, name of school, and anticipated date of graduation

Previous winners of this contest are not eligible to receive this stipend

Please email your essay and cover sheet to: k.liberman@verizon.net

Your application must be received by April 7, 2008. The essays will be judged on content and grammar - please do not use special formatting. The essays will be judged by members of the Boston Chapter’s executive board and student relations committee.

The winner will be notified by May 5, 2008. The stipend can only be applied towards attending the annual conference in Seattle.
